Department of Anatomy was founded by Prof.Dr.Feridun Vural, under Morphology Department in 1984. In the following years , Prof.Dr.Feridun Vural was replaced by Prof.Dr.Erdal Arısan as the head of  Morphology Department. In the year 1993 Anatomy and Histology departments were split into two separate departments under Basic Sciences.  From 1993 to 1995, Prof.Dr.Aymelek Yalın conducted the chairman duties in  Anatomy Department . In 1995, Prof.Dr.Erdal Arısan became the Head of Anatomy Department and served as the chairman until his retirement in the year 2000.  Assoc.Prof. Mehtap Yüksel joined the Anatomy Department in 1993 and was a member of the academic staff until her leave in 2000. In 1997 Prof.Dr.Ümit S. Şehirli and in 2002 Assoc.Prof. N.Ömer Özdoğmuş joined the academic staff. In the year 2000, Prof.Dr. Safiye Çavdar became the Head of Anatomy Department and served as the chairman of the department for the following eleven years until her retirement in 2011. In 2005 Prof.Dr.R.W.Guillery, Emeritus Professor of Anatomy, University of Wisconsin, Madison and Emeritus Professor and chairman of Anatomy Department, University of Oxford, Medical School, joined Marmara University Medical School  Anatomy Department and was in the academic staff until his leave in 2010. In 2008 Assoc.Prof.Dr.Y.Ozgur Çakmak joined the academic staff until his leave in 2010.  After Prof.Dr.Safiye Çavdar’s retirement, Prof.Dr. Umit S. Şehirli became the Head of the Anatomy Department of Marmara University Medical School.
